Getting Started: Creating and Supporting a Friends Group for Your Library

This presentation focuses on the benefits of gathering community volunteers to support a library’s programs and services.  The workshop uses a checklist to develop a Friends of he Library group:  recruiting helpers for a steering committee, determining the Friends’ mission, expanding their membership, and growing the leadership to sustain an active organization.  Libraries with existing Friends groups have also found this workshop helpful as a review of their current practices and to glean ideas for growing their membership base.  To allow for further networking, NVCLS is offering a lunch following the workshop.

Talking is Teaching: A Community Campaign

Talking is Teaching is a national public awareness campaign that centers on the simple message that talking, reading, and singing can help get young children ready to read—and as public libraries, we are perfectly placed to share this message in our communities.  In this class, we’ll review the components of the campaign, explore resources that help you identify community demographics and potential partners, and provide essential support materials, such as posters, research-based handouts,, and even social media templates.  We’ll also discuss a mini grant opportunity that  will support new or existing early literacy partnerships in your community.

RA Genre Study: Amish

Reader’s Advisory is a core service of public libraries, regardless of size.  Patrons have a diversity of reading interests, but it’s difficult for any one library worker to be an expert in every genre.  Maybe you’re strong in mysteries but know nothing about westerns.  Or perhaps your romance game is right on, but you could use a little help with sci-fi?  Luckily, there are experts in our system in every genre; the trick is knowing who they are and finding time to pick their brains.  Join us at NCLS as Michelle McLagan of the Hepburn Library of Lisbon leads the next in a series of genre discussions designed to strengthen your knowledge of different genres, subgenres, popular authors, and those who are a little further under the radar.
