Fantastic Books and Where to Find Them

Materials selection is something all libraries do, regardless of size of budget.  But it’s not always easy to know what to buy, especially in genres or age levels you don’t know well.  Join us for a discussion about the best resources for book discovery and reviews, how to keep up with release dates, and what goes into maintaining a balanced, robust collection in a small community library.

A Year of Literary Celebrations

Children’s Book Week.  World Read Aloud Day.  Bring Your Child to the Library Day.  National Novel Writing Month.  There are so many literacy-themed programming “holidays” in the calendar year that it can be easy to let them slip through the cracks.  When we do remember them, it’s often at the eleventh hour—too late to present an effective program.  Programming is an increasingly important part of library service (it’s even part of DLD’s new minimum standards), and literacy-themed programs and events are a great place to make an impact.  Join us at NCLS for an overview of these celebrations and programming ideas to prom

RA Genre Study : Young Adult and New Adult

Reader’s Advisory is a core service of public libraries, regardless of size.  Patrons have a diversity of reading interests, but it’s difficult for any one library worker to be an expert in every genre.  Maybe you’re strong in mysteries but know nothing about westerns.  Or perhaps your romance game is right on, but you could use a little help with sci-fi?  Luckily, there are experts in our system in every genre; the trick is knowing who they are and finding time to pick their brains.  Join us at NCLS as Katie Male-Riordan of the Hay Memorial Library leads the next in a series of genre discussions designed to strengthen your knowledge of different genres, subgenres, popular authors, and those who are a little further under the radar.
