USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Loans and Grants for Rural Libraries
The Community Facilities Program provides loans and grants to assist in the development of essential community facilities in rural areas and towns of up to 20,000 in population. Loans and grants are available to public entitities such as municipalities, counties and special-purpose districts, as well as non-profit corporations and tribal governments. Funds may be used to construct, enlarge or improve public libraries. This can include costs to acquire land needed for a facility, pay necessary professional fees and purchase equipment required for operation as well as to purchase shelving, furniture, computers, audio-visual equipment, distance learning equipment and bookmobiles.

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT OF THE ARTS
The Our Town program provides support for creative placemaking projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core. All applications must have partnerships that involve two primary partners: a nonprofit organization and a local governmental entity.

JOSEPH F. SHUBERT LIBRARY EXCELLENCE AWARD
Gerald Nichols, Chair of the New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries, announced today that applications for the Joseph F. Shubert Library Excellence Award will be due on June 15, 2012. The 2012 Award Committee members are Mary Muller (Chair), Sharon Orienter, and Steven Manning.
The Award will recognize a New York State library or library consortium that has taken significant steps to improve the quality of library service to its users. This year, the award of $1,000 is sponsored again through the generosity of the Friends of the New York State Library http://www.nyslfriends.org
Projects nominated for the Award should document measurable progress in identifying user needs, taking steps to meet those needs, and evaluating the results. Previous applicants are encouraged to apply, and previous winners of the Award may apply after 3 years.

Library-Based Literacy Programs Recognized
Better World Books/National Center for Family Literacy Libraries and Families Award
The Better World Books/National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) Libraries and Families
Award recognizes innovative library-based literacy programs for families. Library
programs throughout the country with a strong intergenerational approach to helping
parents and children learn together are encouraged to apply. Programs that serve
communities and families with high literacy and socioeconomic needs are of special
interest. Both previously existing and new programs are eligible for the award.
Three libraries will win a $10,000 grant and a trip to NCFL's annual conference.
