Library Advocacy Works!

I want to send a big Thank You to everyone who called, emailed, or visited their State Legislators to remind them about the value that libraries bring to their communities, and how State aid helps libraries with their mission to serve all people.  Your hard work and perseverance has led to this wonderful outcome.

Please take a moment to thank your State Legislators.  One of the things I hear continually from State Legislators is that libraries are one of the few groups that bother to send a simple “Thank You” when something good happens.  So please let them hear it again! You can find their contact information by clicking here.

The Governor, the Assembly and the Senate have agreed upon a State budget that includes increases for libraries.

State Library Aid: Increased $4 million from $91.6 million to $95.6 million.
This is a 4.3% increase in total library aid, which is equivalent to the increase in educational foundation aid. This represents another big step towards the restoration of funding that libraries had before the economic collapse of 2007/08.
State Library Construction Aid: Increased from $14 million to $19 million.
The construction aid program was increased by 35% which is the first increase in a decade.  The State Legislators recognized the real need to help public libraries maintain and renovate their aging buildings.  As a result, we will be able to fund many more grants at the 75% match level.

Thank you,
Stephen Bolton, Director
