OverDrive has released a new app called Libby. For the time being, it's simply another app patrons can use to read NCLS eBooks and listen to audiobooks. OverDrive is hoping to have their magazine platform back by the end of 2017. At that time, it is speculated that Libby will handle the OverDrive magazines but the original OverDrive app will not. Below are two questions from the Libby FAQ:
What's the difference between Libby and the OverDrive app?
Both Libby and the OverDrive app offer the same content from your library.
Libby allows readers to navigate and browse more easily across multiple libraries while you’re always one tap away from your loans. Libby is best for first time users, and provides a simple, yet elegant user experience for current and new users alike.
Will Libby replace the OverDrive app?
Not anytime soon! We have no plans to remove the OverDrive app.
Regarding the later question, my communication with OverDrive staff indicates that they will, at some point, use Libby to replace the OverDrive app. Even if it's 'not anytime soon'.
The app is very user friendly. I would advise library staff to download it to their mobile device and get familiar with it.
