Governor Cuomo is finalizing his Executive Budget proposal, and NOW is the time to SPEAK UP FOR LIBRARY FUNDING! State funding enables NCLS to provide services to our members such as:
- System-wide databases
- Reference and non-fiction materials
- Outreach services
Without State aid, libraries would not be able to provides these essential services to their patrons.
What can you do?
1. Contact the Governor: Please take a moment and contact our Governor Cuomo and let him know how important it is for the State to support our libraries at the funding level they need. Tell the Govenor NO MORE CUTS TO LIBRARY FUNDING! State Education Law mandates Library Aid be $102.6M for the upcoming year – current funding of $95.6M is inadequate, let alone a cut back. To make contacting the Govenor easier for you, NYLA has created an online pre-drafted letter that is directly sent to your local representative. The link to the letter is located at the HERE. NYLA has also released the 2017 NYLA Legislative and Budgetary Priorities – check them out!
2. Attend Library Advocacy Day in Albany: Mark your calendars! Library Advocacy 2017 will take place on Wednesday, March 1, 2017. It's a great opportunity to rally with fellow library supporters and meet with your local representatives at their Albany office. More information about the event can be found HERE. To help defray the cost of attending Library Advocacy Day, NCLS is offering stipends in the amount of $225. These reimbursement stipends are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis and are available to library staff, trustees and volunteers. To request a stipend, email firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information: name, library, role and phone number by February 3rd.
Thank you for speaking up for libraries!
